Gas mixtures partly based on SF 6, partly using known gases and partly employing totally new gases are being researched and developed to reach electrical equipment having performances, dimensions and cost comparable to SF 6 switchgear but with a much lower global warming potential.

Sulfur Hexafluoride (SF6) is an excellent gaseous dielectric for high voltage power applications. It has been used extensively in high voltage circuit breakers and other switchgear employed by the power industry. Applications for SF6 include gas insulated transmission lines and gas insulated power distribution substations.

Air Liquide manufactures sulfur hexafluoride pure gas with purity up to 99.999% or as part of a Scott™ brand specialty gas mixture with air or nitrogen. Sulfur hexafluoride is used in many applications, including dielectric, heat insulation and plasma etching in semiconductor manufacturing.

The key difference between g3 and SF6 is that g3 is a gas mixture while SF6 is a single gas. Elodie Laruelle, GE Grid Solutions Eco-design Engineer, explains: “The critical point for a gas mixture is to maintain the homogeneity of the two components (NovecTM and CO2) throughout the filling process. To ensure this homogeneity, the filling equipment needs to directly heat up the g3 bottle to a specific temperature, to reach the supercritical state of the gas mixture.
