History of SF6

Oct 23, 2020During operation of SF6 circuit breaker, this highly compressed gas is released through the arc in the breaker and collected to a relatively low-pressure reservoir and then it is pumped back to the high-pressure reservoir for reutilizing. The working of SF6 circuit breaker is a little bit different in modern time. The innovation of puffer type design makes the operation of SF6 CB much easier.

The sulphur hexafluoride gas (SF6) circuit breaker gives noiseless operation due it’s closed gas circuit and no exhaust to atmosphere, unlike the air blast circuit breaker. The compact design of SF6 gas CBs substantially reduces space requirements and building installation costs. The SF6 gas circuit breakers can handle all known switching phenomena.

The SF 6 gas absorbs the free electrons in the arc path and forms ions which do not act as a charge carrier. These ions increase the dielectric strength of the gas and hence the arc is extinguished. This process reduces the pressure of the SF 6 gas up to 3kg/cm^2 thus; it is stored in the low-pressure reservoir. This low-pressure gas is pulled back to the high-pressure reservoir for re-use.

SF 6 is colour less, odour less and non toxic gas. SF 6 is an inert gas. So in normal operating condition the metallic parts in contact with the gas are not corroded. This ensures the life of the breaker and reduces the need for maintenance. SF 6 has high thermal conductivity which means the heat dissipation capacity is more.
