Many builders are insulating these walls fully for sound proofing purposes per the International Building Code (IBC), Section 1207, Sound Transmission walls, partitions, and floor/ceiling assemblies separating dwelling units from each other must have a sound transmission class (STC) of not less than 50 for airborne noise when tested in accordance with ASTM E 90.

Figure 2 shows one of many ways to approach double wall construction. In this example, the exterior wall uses 2×6 studs and the inner wall uses 2×4 studs. There is a gap between the two walls so that a large amount of insulation can be used. This gap can be any size required to provide the R-value of insulation needed.

Insulating Glass Units (IG Units) can be made with air or other gases between the two sheets of glass. We use air-filled because the seals have a longer life with air. While we can provide Argon gas filled windows at an increased price, we caution that this could result in reduced life due to seal failure.

DTE Energy must be the primary provider of your home’s heat (most DTE Energy gas and gas/electric combination customers qualify). Single-family homes and homes with less than five connected housing units are eligible. Your home must have a separate entrance and a separate meter. New construction homes do not qualify. Using imperial units, a rule of thumb in standard IGU construction is that each change in the component of the IGU results in an increase of 1 R-value to the efficiency of the unit. Adding Argon gas increases the efficiency to about R-3. Using Low emissivity glass on surface #2 will add another R-value.
