SF6 is widely used as an insulating and arc quenching gas in medium and high voltage transformers. As equipment ages, it is being repaired or replaced with more efficient equipment which typically uses 1/3 the quantity of SF6. This creates a need to recover the SF6 for recycling or disposal.
